Library Relocation Projects by Army Ants

Lancashire County Council Schools Library

A large project undertaken by Army Ants was the relocation of Lancashire County Councils School Library to their new premises on the outskirts of Preston. This involved the relocation of 450,000 books and a total of 980 LC3 crates.

Following a full visual survey, this enormous project involved packing, recording and transporting the entire book stock and belongings from the original location and then unpacking and re-shelving everything in the correct decimal order at the new library. It was essential that we followed the carefully planned schedule down to the finest of details, which meant working in close coordination with library staff, shelving contractors and all other involved parties. Army Ants helped with the initial layout of the racking in the new warehouse and prepared a landing area for the heavy crates, which then needed to be put in order for distribution to the correct racking system.

The removals staff were broken up into two different teams, some with trolleys and some with pens because as you can imagine, putting that volume of books back onto shelves was very demanding on the hands and arms so we rotated the teams every 30 minutes to offer sufficient rest.

We are very proud to say that we successfully delivered the project in 12 days (well within the expected time scales and budget) with approximately 130 tonnes transported!

“ The whole 'moving' process involving packing up all our book stock and belongings (with a pause in the middle while our shelving was separately dismantled & re-erected in its new home) and then unpacking and re-shelving the stock (in Dewey Decimal order of course!) was a huge undertaking. Army Ants Removals gave us a realistic estimate of the time to complete the operation, working in close coordination with our shelving contractors.

The company were mindful of our need to move as swiftly as possible and yet keep functioning and working as a service with minimum interruption. A very organised team worked with impressive speed and accuracy in packing and moving our belongings.

We were given a detailed daily itinerary of what was moving and when – and that was exactly what happened! No time was wasted and we were consulted throughout the move in case any adjustments to the plan were necessary. The crew were also extremely patient as we asked them to "tweak" the positions of six desks several times, to ensure the best use of our office space (apologies but we are perfectionists chaps!). Moving is always a stressful time, but thanks to a very obliging team we relocated record time.
